Sarah is one of the first practitioners who qualified in the UK to carry out this work, in 2015, and she now assists on courses to train other practitioners to learn these techniques as well as offering them in her own practice.
ScarWork is a non-invasive, totally painless method of integrating scar tissue into the fascial matrix of the surrounding skin.
It can improve the feel and functionality of old and new scars, reducing pain, numbness, and improving mobility of the scar.
It promotes healing on the scar surface and reduces adhesions in the underlying tissue, by stimulating the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems to encourage renewed healing and promote improved tissue health.
Often a cosmetic improvement occurs, reducing the appearance of the scar. Scars usually appear smaller, lighter, smoother to the surrounding skin or less raised/sunken, but the main emphasis of the treatment is to improve how the scar feels.
All kinds of scars, from very old, to newly healed (once discharged from your doctor) can be treated using ScarWork. Scars which respond to ScarWork treatment include:
- knee replacement
- hip replacement
- skin grafts
- facial scarring (from surgery or injury)

Keloid scars tend to take longer and can be less responsive to the treatment but this depends on the individual and the number of sessions undertaken.
For most scars, results are visible and tangible within minutes of a session beginning, but some scars take longer to respond.
A session includes an initial consultation, after which Sarah will work gently into the scar and surrounding tissue while you relax on the massage table. Sarah uses a number of specially developed techniques that gently stimulate the tissue to promote healing of the scarred area.
ScarWork has been pioneered and developed by Sharon Wheeler, a US based therapist with 23 years’ experience of bodywork. Find out more about Sharon and ScarWork here.
Sarah has treated a huge range of scars since qualifying, ranging from C-section, post-mastectomy and diep flap surgeries to burns and grafts, ankle and knee pins and plates to acne scars.
Testimonials
Many other therapists carry before/after photos on their web sites and I encourage you to visit them to see some of the results for yourself.
I tend not to spend too much time taking photos, preferring to focus on treatment, so I don’t have any I can share online currently but I am working on it.
Here is what just two clients have to say about ScarWork treatment with me:
Jakob Williams, 21, Manchester, music student
Jakob suffered a significant burn as a child when a kettle fell on him, leaving a large scar which covered his left arm and extended to his chest and shoulder. As a teenager, he became aware of restriction of movement and discomfort from the scar and was unhappy with its appearance. We carried out 8 sessions over 4 months in 2015/2016 when he was aged 19.
“There were no negative effects on my scar from the treatment. The treatment had a profound effect on my arm and chest as a whole, making the joint around my shoulder especially a lot more flexible and less painful/stiff to move. I had nowhere near the amount of movement in my shoulder that i do now. Before the skin would always be too tight and pull, especially in winter.
Post-treatment, the appearance of my scar is massively improved. Before it was a lot thicker and had a lot more different colours in it (i.e. red and purple). Now, a lot more of it is skin colour and skin level, a lot less raised and a lot smoother.
I can’t recommend Sarah highly enough; she’s good at what she does, her treatment works and really helps boost confidence about scars etc, and above all she is really professional, but mad the treatments enjoyable and relaxing.”
Deirdra Barr, Manchester, Yoga Teacher
Deirdra had a diastasis recti with herniation from a pregnancy, which eventually required surgery. Deirdra says, “It was a huge decision to have the surgery because I think surgeries can create other issues but there was no organic way of fixing an issue that long term could have serious health implications.”
It healed fairly well but she was left with some deep puckering around the belly button and a deep knot in the middle and restricted movement, which is quite common for this type of surgery, as well as diep flap surgeries. We carried out 4 x treatments over 6 weeks in 2016.
Deirdra explains, why she sought treatment, “It was more the tightness and restricted movement than the appearance [of the scar] as I’m a yoga teacher. But I wasn’t overly happy with the appearance.
“Sarah gently strokes the scar tissue in quick rapid movements that cause no pain, just occasionally a strange unraveling feeling. I’d often feel emotional afterwards and sometimes during it. You can talk or stay silent.
“[I found a] huge benefit physically and it really flattened out and my mobility around the whole area improved significantly.
“I felt like I let go of some of the emotional context around having surgery and then being restricted in my movement. I actually feel kind of proud of it now! Certainly not bothered about it in an intimate context.
“Overall it really significantly improved. I have very few hang ups about it!
“I would absolutely recommend this treatment but especially Sarah as her manner, knowledge and professionalism is exceptional.”
